Good News, that sound is necessary for the ignition to work..... Check out the 'resource site' from the board index, you are going to need it!! The electrics guys will be along to tell you exactly what the buzz is, but it is needed! I would not start the engine without checking things out, serious engine damage can result.

Most notably oil seeping from the oil system into crankcase chambers, ready to cause hydrolock and bend one of your connecting rods when you try to start it!

The CDI unit in early H1's will buzz when they are working... no buzz... no spark.
The oil mentioned is in the crankcase... a result of leaking oil check valves. That oil can move up into the combustion chamber and cause hydrolock bending rods. The way to determine whether or not there is oil in the crankcase is to insert a tube thru the carb (WOT), under the piston, into the crankcase. If the tube is wet with oil it needs to be sucked out.

Right, and to add to that, kicking with the plugs out doesn't get the engine spinning fast enough to pump the oil up into the cylinders, if it's there. It usually happens in the first few revolutions of running after an engine has been sitting for a long time. More than one forum member here has been caught by this.

You need to get the hose Mraxl described all the way to the bottom of each crank chamber to see if oil is puddled there, and to suck it out if so.

ok i get it now how much oil in the crankcase is exceptable before damage would occur?...i'm sure a .25 of a cup of oil drained right away!

It takes only a tablespoon or two. There isn't much space above the piston at top dead center, and a couple tablespoons of oil up there is enough to cause damage.

If you're not sure, you can put a towel over the three open spark plug holes and get to the top of a hill. Put it in gear, get going ten or 15 mph, let out the clutch and spin the engine good.

CAUTION!!! THE 1970 H1 DOES NOT HAVE CYLINDER DRAIN PLUGS!!!!! If you removed a single plug on the bottom that is for the transmission. The crankcase and transmission are separated on a two stroke. The best way to check/remove oil from the crankcase is to put the piston at TDC and use a turkey baster with a hose on it to suck the oil out. You can either remove the carbs (probably needed anyway to clean them properly) or remove the air filter and stick the hose through the carb. The other thing to check is the oil tank. It has a screen at the exit that can plug up when the oil gets old and turns to a gelatinous goo. The transmission should hold about a liter/quart of gear oil so it looks like it was low as you say you only got a quarter cup out of it.
