Post subject:  Thoughts on chains

I thought I'd say hello and ask a question here.
Some of you are probably following my build on one of the other boards.

I'm looking at 530 chains and wondering what folks are using these days.
In the past I'd always used standard DID non-oring chains and while a little messy they held up well enough.
Now I see there are x-ring chains and am curious if there are any clearance problems with the clutch release when using a 16 tooth front sprocket due to the added width of the chain.
I want to stay with a 530 chain. My rear wheel is not equipped with a cush drive and my sprockets are fairly new.

Here's a pic with the old chain.

I run an off set sprocket, 15 tooth, and the 530 o-ring chain just misses the clutch pusher adjuster (Ralphs clutch pusher) (and just hits the sprocket cover  )
Im not sure... if the sprocket wasn't offset I think it would hit the clutch pusher with the D.I.D o-ring chain I am running.

depends can't run 530 O ring on my H2S the chain hits the clutch actuator so am 525. No trouble on my 69 H1 so I run on it 530 O ring 8-)

Others than JB and a couple of others, most of us really don't ride a lot, so chain maintenance is not a big deal. So just run a standard chain.

They originally ran a 530 standard chain, since then chains and lubes have come a long way. A standard 530 chain, and a bit of maintenance, keep it lubed with a "non fly-off" type aerosol and adjusted properly and there should not be any problems.

a standart one needs a set up every 350 miles or less and if it'sn't raining. O ring needs a set up each 1500 miles or more rain or not

or just fit a Scott oiler, I've been fitting them for years, the chains stay lubed and clean
which is exactly what the chain needs. :)

Anyone like myself use candle wax?
Old MX chain trick.

Completely clean the chain-heat and rub/soak chain in wax.

Let cool and put into service.

It seals, lubes when needed and does not have all the dirt/sand crap sticking to it.

And boy, is it quiet.

I use candle wax on my mountain bike chain. I heat it with a propane torch as I spin the cranks, and when it's hot enough, I hold an old candle against it and get it good and soaked with wax. It works great on the trails because dirt and sand don't stick.

The drawback is that is needs re-waxing much more often than chain lube, like every couple hours of riding, and if I ride in the rain I have to re-wax immediately or it rusts.

I ordered a EK 530 xring chain and it almost fit.
It cleared the clutch actuator anyways.
It would've fit much better if it was a 530 chain instead of a 525 8-)
One end of the box was stamped 530 and the other end was stamped 525 as was the chain.

Thanks for the regulator Jim.
