What it was is I slapped the new copper gaskets on without annealing them. They were pretty stiff copper from the start. I annealed and torqued that cylinder last night, so one more cylinder to go, but it hasn't gave me problems yet.

One other tip for you:
Use Permatex copper spray on your head gaskets. It helps prevent oil weeps.

COPPER SPRAY is realy good stuff. I've even heavily coated and re-used head gaskets on four strokes in a pinch with that stuff! Don't wait for it to dry, because it doesn't!

Instead of copper spray, I use cheap aluminum spray paint. The kind you want is the kind that dries shiny, but will rub off on your fingers(often the "chrome" spray paint, and generally the cheaper the better). Anneal the gasket, spray on two or three coats of paint, then install while the paint is still tacky. The paint is shiny because it's got aluminum particles on in it, these seal imperfections the same way as the copper spray, but the particles are a bit finer. The paint being tacky when installed also helps "glue" the gasket on, although it's still easily removable if it ever has to come back off. I use it on all my metal and metal clad gaskets including the H1 and the head gasket in my '55 Plymouth, and have never had any issues with it :)
