Not sure what "cap" you are talking about. What model, the air boxes are quite different... Pictures?

the cap that holds down the filter with a screw. i am thinking its necessary cause it has to hold the filter in place, just thought it would create more flow without it.

The issue is not volume flow, but... ambient and pressurized air OUTSIDE the filter housing. We want both as cool air as possible entering the filter area, AND NO disruption from fast passing air around the filtering media. K&N type filters lessen the flow restriction past them, and that extra air passing by them can make for evacuation of the filter area inside, and vacuum pull into the carb inlet.

Best to put a K&N filter into the stock filter canister, and leave the snorkel off the inlet to the filter.

With INDIVIDUAL filters on carb inlets, an even larger issue looms... VELOCITY of air into the carb. Loss of velocity makes for harder jetting efforts, including revised air corrector, needle, needle jet and main selection. Easiest way to bring the power band back down from the filter directly on the carb 10,000 RPM level, is to install a length of some sort of spacer between the carb outlet and filter boss, to get the inlet VELOCITY back to reasonable RPM levels, jetting more realistic, and a happier triple.

But then... just what the heck do I know......
