A necessary evil... If hockey players didn't self regulate dirty play and cheap shots with a couple of knuckles to the forehead, it would end up as pathetic as soccer.
In fact, I'd be more inclined to watch soccer if 1/2 of those pansies got their block knocked off for diving and cheap shots.
Case in point, last summer during the World Cup had a "repeat offender" bite a guys shoulder? He wouldn't have teeth to do it again in hockey... Lesson learned!

I totally agree, if they took the "drama" (fighting/hard checking/contact) out of hockey, nobody, and I mean NOBODY would tune in...and it would definitely be just as boring to watch as soccer.
Both are fun sports to play, but mind-numbingly boring if there isn't "contact"....

Supposedly soccer is growing here in the states, and if they got rid of the ridiculously fake dives/drama and replaced it with fist fights (and a penalty box for the naughty!), it would surpass all other sports here.

No pads, bare bones street fighting with a ball!!!!! What's not to like?

Agreed, olympic woman's hockey is a perfect example, awesome talent but no contact makes it tough to watch...
USA vs. Canada world juniors today at 4pm... I could care less about it being New Year's Eve, I'm stoked to watch that game!
Btw, no fighting in this tourny... ;)

That's the key for me. I enjoy playing the games, but not watching others play them.
