Does anyone have a trick for bending the sprocket lock tabs without scratching the sprocket ?

My trick is to use self locking nuts and plain washers and forget the sheet metal thing. I assume you mean the rear sprocket.

Yeah I use a standard lock washer and nut myself, although I do strike a line across the nut and bolt end just to make sure they aren't moving.
To answer your question, I have a couple things you could try...
Throw shim washers under the locking tab, just thick enough so you can get you favorite pry bar under it or try to pre-assemble, mark where the nut flat ends up torqued, then take apart and pre bend at the line enough to get it started.

Bend the tab slightly before installing, with a wide flat plier. Then tighten nuts and bend the rest of the way...bam done!!

I have a piece of sturdy nylon that I shaped in the form of a chisel.
Just make sure the tabs are slightly curved outward when installing so you have a lead edge to sneak the wedge under.
Then drive her home till the washers meet the nuts.

Thanks for the tips, ended up tightening the nuts down with a tie wrap underneath the edge of the lock plate then finished with a small chanellock pliers
