I've been pushing on with the S3A.

Tires are off and I'm looking at the rear hub. Looks pretty ugly to me--what is my next move to restore the hub and wheel to near new luster?

If you want it really nice cut the spokes and just start with the hub. I knock out the old bearings and bead blast it.
Then I spend hours polishing the crap out of it. Then install stainless steel spokes and a new rim.

Thanks.

Where would I get the correct stainless spokes and rim?

Spokes, rims, bearings all available here: http://www.diablocycle.com/Wheels-c-44/
many other vendors here : http://kawtriple.com/mraxl/

I soda blasted my rims and they came out good, most chrome will clean up if there are no deep pits.

Am I seeing the price correctly--$100 for stainless spokes per wheel? Thanks

It's not cheap to restore wheels but the end result will be worth it.

I find it relaxing but the end results are great as said. Just be careful as I got one done and found out D I D had a problem with there rims having a big flat spot. I baught them from z1 and they had no problem with warranty. Click the bottom pic to see the flat spot. :( That noise is something inside the rim.

I bought zince plated spokes (like the originals) for $50 per wheel. I regretted it almost immediately. :banghead
Get the stainless spokes.

Here is a pic of my finished rear wheel:

The zinc turns dull pretty quickly and doesn't buff out very easily. They still look nice on the bike but are not as easy to maintain as stainless IMO.
