Again with the 1975 S3A.

How does one get to the front wheel bearings? I'd like to inspect them at the very least.

Alxe unscrews from speedo drive (RH thread). Then you must remove oil seal. & snap ring on one side if you wish to remove the bearings. Then drive out bearings & remove center spacer.

If you can disassemble with two crescents while it sits on a pad on the ground, you may have to cinch one end of the axle in a solidly mounted vise, and then try it again. Alot of these are really tight.

Once the axle is out and snap rings removed, the spacer between bearings can be moved slightly off-center. Use a drift to reach through the bearing bore and drive the opposite bearing out by the inner race. Once the bearings are removed you can clean them off to check the bearing part numbers and then throw them away. I would not re-use bearings that were driven out by the inner races.

You could check them in place. Put your thumb or finger in the inner race and while applying axial pressure on the bearing, rotating the bearing slowly. It should be silky smooth with no little bumps or dragging spots. When in doubt, replace them. They are cheap.

There is a tool for disassembly of the hub, round with 2 flats fits a 3/8 drive. I am sure it is discontinued as not much uses that fastener anymore, the tool works real good on the ones that have been together for years.
