I finally got all the stuff lined up today and got set up and plated two pieces. Here is the brake lever spring and the front brake arm. I think they turned out real well.    The rear brake arm is NOS.  Here is what the spring looked like before cleanup and plating.

How much did you have to invest to get everything you need. I know a good power supply is very important. At my old job we did plating there and half the time the stuff came out like crap. Seemed like the chemicals had to be changed once a week but it was used everyday, all day long. |

I bought the cheapest kit they have, the 1.5 gallon kit. Everything together was about $250. I'm using a battery charger running through a 600w dimmer switch and although I can't control the amps perfectly it seems to be okay. Just plating the two pieces I have done has saved me the $50 it would have cost to replace them. I think the finish is great. I did put 3/4 of a teaspoon of brightener in the batch after doing a test piece and the shine is about perfect. The kit isn't complete, I still needed to round up a heater, thermometer, copper tube, alligator clips, distilled water, spray bottle, hanging wire, battery charger(i'm thinkin a guy should buy the DC rectifier so your power is steady and readable), and a tin snip. I read the output from the charger at the leads with a meter. With the charger on 6v, 2a trickle I can use the dimmer and get it down to 1.5v, and .07ma which seems to be good for about 5 square inches of surface. I will be playing around and hopefully will get the method down a little better. I'm glad I bought it. |

Here is some more of the setup, very crude and simple. I bought the $45 titanium heater from Caswell. From room temperature it takes 30 to 45 minutes to heat the washing solution.  Here is the whole works. The pee looking stuff is the zinc bath. I heat the wash first to 170 degrees and then I heat the zinc bath to 120.  Here is how I tie the parts. I didn't read anywhere in the manual about what kind of wire to use to hang the parts on. The two I did last night I used extremely thin steel wire, thinner than piano wire. I found that if I didn't attach two of the wires to the piece being zinced the single wire would glow red. Today I am going to try solid copper wire.  Here is the dimmer that I rigged up to plug into the GFI, the charger then plugs into it.

I baught one of those kits awhile back just couldnt figure out the square inch instructions guess i should try again as yours looks nice.
