Having a mystery issue with the 72 H2 I just got back together. Engine starts and runs well (thanks to Charlie for the rebuilt crank!), but the clutch makes a funky grinding / whir / rattle when the lever is pulled. I installed the pressure play pusher, ball, rod actuation mechanism as illustrated in the manual with pleanty of oil during assembly. Took the clutch apart apart and can't find anything out of the ordinary. No wear marks on the pressure plate. Some sanding like marks on the end of the pusher.

I think the pusher may not be spinning with the pressure plate? Any ideas?

Check for rub marks inside clutch cover from friction plates.
Check for loose clutch basket rivets.

I will have to check it tomorrow. I didn't notice wear inside the clutch cover when it was apart initially. I did put in new vesrah friction plates and the tabs seemed that they were taller than the plates that came out. No issues with the basket rivets that I noticed when I was assembling the engine. I'll check again.

The taller tabs are likely the problem.

Has anyone else had an issue with vesrah friction plates? Seems like quite a few of you use them and prefer them over the Barnett plates. I'm not too thrilled of the prospect of filing down all the tabs on all of the friction plates or putting the stock plates back in. Seems like a strange problem.

IF that is the problem, trimming the outermost plate should be the only one needed.

It is the clutch plate under the ring.

I think I had to trim several plates(tabs on the plates) look at the inside of your primary cover, you will see where they are rubbing.

I just had this problem last week. Got fiber clutch plates installed and heard a noise as soon as I started
the bike. Pulled it apart and placed the stock old fiber above the new one in the photo. Had to trim 2 discs,
one for the locking ring and the second one (last one in) for clearance. Think they where from EBC. Use a
bench grinder and it was a quick process to re-size them.
