Post subject: | Restoring chrome plated parts |
Some of my stuff I have carefully polished to an acceptable appearance for chrome plated parts. Now I still have a bunch of parts- brake pedal, handlebar, etc - that are rusted and pitted beyond cleanup. Here's my question. When getting chrome plated parts re-chromed, should I just hand them to a competent chrome plater (discussed on another thread) or should I grind all the old chrome off before going to the plater? I have never worked with damaged chrome plated parts before and I thought you guys might have some advice for me. Thanks. |

I always thought prepping the items was part of the cost they charge? Dont they have a caustic dip for parts that they use before starting the chroming proccess? |

Hand him the parts. He needs to strip, prep, plate and polish. Make sure they are doing copper, nickle then chrome. The pits should fill in with the copper coat. I would make a list of the parts, take pics of them and send the plater a copy keeping one for yourself in the event something comes up missing. Its easier to keep track of your precious parts. |

Keep a list!!! YES! Let him do all the work, otherwise if it doesn't turn out he will blame it on your work! ![]() |

Thanks for the replies and good advice. I will take pictures of everything as suggested and make a list for the plating shop. |

The copper will not necessarily fill the pits unless you discuss this with the platter. |

Thanks Ric. I am very familiar with the whole plating process from having parts done in-house at a large facility where I worked. I am just not experienced with taking old parts and making them look new again. The finished chrome can not look better than the polish job on the parent metal. Just like a paint job. I have seen some places that have different grades of finish that are available for different price levels. Others just do one level of quality for one price. |
