Yeah, it's easy to touch up running bikes, bolt on some Lesters and chambers, or even go through a motor (my H2C). That's the extent of my endeavors thus far...aside from seemingly always buying parts, and then extra parts off ebay that sit on a shelf collecting dust. So here begins my very 1st attempt at a ground up build, starting with a bare frame and related parts (not the one pictured in my avatar). I decided that instead of powder coating, I would just have a local shop media blast all the old paint and rust off of the main items, after which they spray a coat of epoxy primer atop http://www.americanstrippingsacramento.com/about.html. I chose this route because if I ever need to modify or cut any part of this frame, I figured paint would be easier to touch up. I picked these up yesterday(Sat), cost out the door $136. ![]() Some pitting here but I don't care...it's intended to be a rider, not a show bike. ![]() Today I lightly ran by hand an abrasive pad over most of the surfaces, wiped any dust off, and proceeded to rattle can everything semi-gloss, first starting with the frame, then hanging up the swingarm afterwards and painting that. The chain guard, kick stand, and brake arm I sprayed while holding up by a screw or bolt fastened to it. Then I hung them through the frame to air dry. ![]() ![]() I also have the matching engine cases to this frame, so that's what I will have titled when I get this to the rolling chassis stage, but then I do have a rebuilt "running" motor that I got a few years back from FloridaSteve that will supplant that for the forseeable future. My biggest hurdle is always just starting something, so now that I've got the ball rolling, I'm hoping to keep making progress without running into too difficult of hurdles... ![]() |

Looking good, it's very rewarding to build a bike from the frame up. |

Thats the way I have been doing my h2 since it got stripped years ago but they come out great in the end and it seems you got a great start. ![]() |

Looking good, I am at the same place on a '72 S2 project and finally moving forward. I went with the powdercoat, it has worked good in the past and I don't have any way to shoot paint other than a spray can. One of the things that has been an issue is the front end, I replaced the tubes and rechromed the legs on my H1A because I wanted the drum brake and the original looking forks, but on the S2 I am definitely going with something with a disc. Keep the updates coming!!! |

No front drum on this one - awaiting this frame will be S2A fork assemblies, steering damper (couple parts different from 72), caliper, 18 x 1.60 wheel, and S3 triple clamps (same as S2A according to part part number's), all off ebay over the past months. |
