Dear all,

I own a 1974 H1 that is currently in pieces. I am starting the restoration and while I clean up all of the engine parts, I want to have the frame repainted.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable paint shop around the Central NJ area that does good jobs. I would like somebody that has experience painting Motorcycle frames so I do not have to worry about paint getting into places where it should not get (bolt holes, steering head, and so on) but all nooks are covered.

I was thinking of getting the frame powder coated and I was wondering if I would still be able to see the frame serial number through the powder coat?
Further, what is the correct color for the frame? Just glossy black?

Before I have the frame painted I will need to straighten the rear support for the turn signal. As can be seen from the images, probably the bike fell on its side and the turn signal stem twisted the support. The metal is pretty thick and there is not much space between the sandwiched parts. Any suggestions as the best way to straighten the support? Hammer it? Heat it first?

Finally is there any way of removing the steering head sticker? I know there are places where I can buy replacement and I will do that, but if at all possible I would like to save the original.

Thank you,

claudio

RB here on the board makes replacement frame stickers, I believe the frame is 80% gloss, someone that knows for sure will pipe in. The rest, I don't have a clue....

RB'S are just like the original, so order 2 and you got one extra to put away.

I think that is what I will have to do as I have been trying for a few days to remove the labels with no success.

As I try and figure out where to paint the frame, here are a few questions I have about the engine restoration:

(1) Any ideas how to remove the Check Valves from the bottom of the crankcase? The cranckcase has been through several cycles of Ulrasonic cleaning but the Check Valves seem to be stuck on the case. Should I try to tap the valves with a rubber mallet?

Image

(2) The cylinder fins have a strange finish. It almost looks like it's painted on but it does not feel that way. There seem to be brush strokes on the top fins. Is this normal?

(3) The base gasket on the crankcase is very though to get off. I am weary to use a razor blade to remove it, but using plastic scrapers has almost no effect on it. Keep in mind that the case has also gone though several cycles of Ultrasonic cleaning but it does not seem to affect the gasket remains. I was thinking of using something like Goo Gone? Will this damage the cases? Anything better that I can use?

(4) The bottom case has some damage from a loose chain. How can I fix it? Can a good welder "build up" the missing material? Anybody here offer welding services?

Thank you for any help.

as to the brush finish i looked at my spare set and they have the same marks,
and auto zone carry a gasket remover spray in a can (resist the urge to use a metal blade) ,plastic scaper much better with the spray.
and a good welder would build the chain bites .
thats all i got.
