Have you tried less sanding with the very fine paper, and substituting a coarse polish with something like tripoli?

yes, very fine equaled more sanding

I have the best luck with PJ1 500 deg engine paint of any paint I've used. It holds up well to gas and other chemicals. It adheres good to aluminum. It is a high solids paint so be sure to clear the nozzle ever couple of minutes while you are painting. It also buffs out well if you use the gloss engine black..I rubbed out one engine case by hand as I couldn't seem to keep off the over spray cause of the shape of the case. The only problem I see you'll may have is it doesn't mix well with red wine, I prefer a dark beer when I paint.

PS, I save the nozzles from empty cans as I've had some to stop up due to the high solids. That way I have spares I can use if one stops ups.

Thanks for posting, :thumbup: I learned something about polishing. Do you apply anything to protect the surface afterwards?

I must say, seeing them on your bike is much better than having them boxed up in my garage. LOL
