Anyone specializing in exhaust system parts restoration? Chrome needs freshening a bit and a few small minor dents straightened on an otherwise very good original H2 exhaust system.

Thanks, Rusty34

I guess the popular option is just look for repro parts but I'd like to find out if it's possible to retain the originals (stamped numbers) for authentic restoration work. Is anyone straightening small dents, fixing light scrapes and re-chroming?

Thanks

Rusty, I don't know of anyone of the board doing this kind of work. I've heard that some chrome platers can do some level of restoration work, including filling of small dents and imperfections. It might be a good idea to contact a couple in your area and see what they will do, for what price. I'd certainly point out the stamped numbers and make sure they don't get filled up or polished out, if you want to keep them.

Obviously not everyone cares about originality right now but as these bikes get older it might get more important to restore and retain the original parts when possible. it is only original once.

Thanks, Rusty34

a lot of chromers won't touch 2-stroke pipes because they are so dirty on the inside which really messes up the chroming vats... I gave up and found a excellent set of clean rust free OEM pipes for my H2C after searching for years. Ain't cheap tho.....

Was advised by someone with triple restoration experience that you can't do much grinding on them or you'll weaken the welds. I'd like to retain the original pipes but maybe improve the appearance a little. Maybe you can have them cleaned in a hot tank first so they won't corrupt the plater's vat? Maybe I could attend a few swapmeets and try to make some contacts and see what our options are out there. I bet a nice set of originals would be pretty high if you can find them though.

Thanks, Rusty

Some platers will fill the pipes with water and plug the ends, and then plate. But then, some won't.

Yes, they have to be careful with the welds. RIC has his rechromed, and they polished down the welds to where they started leaking at the edge.

May be of interest. Found this link over in the Vendors and Services Forum: http://motocrosspiperepair.com/Photos.html

Anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks, Rusty34
