I was checking electrical and I could not get the Neutral lamp on the instrument panel. Checked wiring and connectors and swapped bulbs. I finally found out that the bulb is good and the socket works. The switch was open all the time. I pulled it out and took a look. This is what I found:

It may not be obvious but there is supposed to be a copper "wiper" that contacts a screw on the shift drum when the trans is in neutral. It took me a few minutes to sort all that out. Then I went looking in parts bins for something to make a new contact/wiper out of. I found the copper spark plug connector also shown in the picture.

A little cutting and a little drilling and hardly any bending and this was born:

Here it is from the other view. It shorted against the case on the first try but I made a small adjustment and it worked very well.

I did not even check availability. Maybe these are only $1 but I had that creative urge so I just followed through. Maybe this will help someone in a pinch.

You did good!
I made a contact out of a paper clip.

Don't they have 2 gear lock outs?

Same concern here. I shifted it up and down several times and it seems to work without difficulty. I will need to put a few thousand more shifts on it to know if it will hold up.

mraxl - I like the paperclip idea. My shift drum has a slotted screw installed in the OD. The slotted head is what hits this contact. I wonder if the slotted head would chew up the paperclip loop.

John - what does "two gear lock outs" mean?

I did this about 20 years ago and it still works.... don't ride much though. Can't remember how I configured it.

The repo replacements don't come with the metal contact.

That doesn't sound very useful. Am I missing something in what you said?
