I have seen the restoration video which looks great, my question is did the original finish have a clear coat on the polished alloy, and if not and I polish the alloy will it last with out a clear coat?

Yes. Plastic clear coat that turns yellow with age.

Ok Thanks, so if I have to touch them I have to do the full restoration as in the video, or leave them.

I didn't clear coat mine after I polished them. If the bike is kept inside it won't be much of an issue. You will have to maintain the shine occasionally.

I support Tim's view also, the sliders are easy to polish and maintaining the finish is easy also.
