Post subject:  Need build/restoration advice

Hello, like many of you I had a beautiful '72 H2 750 back in the later 70's. Didn't realize what a treasure it was at the time and I sold it. So a year or two ago I restored and sold a Honda 750, fun project. That got me thinking about my old H2 and started me looking to find a replacement. I was a little shocked to discover that to find any H2 I'd probably have to fork over $10k plus to get one, a lot more for something running. And forget about finding a basket case to rebuild.

So I've been looking at building another from scratch and this is where I need some direction, where to start. I've come across a (very) few rollers and a number of frames with cases. There seem to be a lot of parts available, probably because people are making more money selling parts than whole bikes. What the best starting point? Build up a motor first? Start with a frame? I'm in CT and I want to build a fairly stock bike that I can register and ride. No racing but I'd like to build it run as good as my old bike. Not too concerned about everything being the same year but maybe the best combination of early 70's 750's.

Where to start? I'm competing with a lot of guys stripping them down, I need to build one back up.

Thanks

PS - Any CT triple owners around?

Im no expert, but I have been watching the market over the last 10 years or so. It seems to me the best bargain is a lower end rider or a fairly complete non runner. In my opinion the basket cases I have seen are over priced for what they need to be restored. If you are pretty handy I suppose you could piece one together but would have to invest a fortune of time and effort finding and restoring parts. On the other end of the spectrum there are a LOT of overpriced (Restored) bikes (buyer beware!). Obviously or maybe not so much depending on your location Title is most important. In my estimation save some time and money by investing in a more complete bike. Good Luck!

Nitrous, thanks for the reply. I've been looking but have only seen one or two in the past year. And they go fast. One bike came up in NY but right after I contacted the seller the listing went away and never showed up again. The other one was in RI and was pretty modified, not very original, but they were looking for a premium price. Not sure what that one went for.

I guess it's just a matter of luck finding one. I have the cash if I could just find a bike. If it comes to it I'll make the trek to Deals Gap.

A basket case / barn find would be the best case. Not too concerned about the condition because I like the rebuild as much as riding when done.

Fingers crossed!

I wouldn't hesitate to find a frame and a beater engine, and gradually put together the rest. I've found a lot of parts at fair prices within the Triples Community all over the World, and specialist work is right here, crankshafts for example. I can't think of anything that is not available, either used or repro. And there is a LOT of fun and satisfaction in building things yourself, if you are reasonably proficient with tools. Not to mention the free advice right here! Titles and registration, I don't know, it's pretty straightforward where I am. (You can marry a frame/engine no. if it's not on the stolen list, etc.) I have a heap of early H1 H2 stuff which I sell off cheap to help people out in Aus. (no seats or pipes, don't P.M. me!! )
