Post subject:  Rear Brake Cable & Wire Questions

Hey guys, working on the rear brake on a S2. Two questions:

1) The cable is in really good shape - after some evaporust soaking, the spring came back to life! What is the ideal cable lubricant? spray, grease,? i can't imagine that wd-40 is at top of the list, but maybe.

2) The wire casing on the switch is brittle. What is the real way to fix? wrap in e-tape? or is there long heat shrink wrap (i only have ever seen really short pieces)?

For the wiring, I'd clip off the bullet connectors, leaving as much wire as possible, replace the black sleeve, and install new bullet connectors.

An easy way to lube a cable like that is with a spray grease with a little tube on the nozzle, and one of those little adapters that clamps to the end of the cable and has a rubber fitting you stick the little tube in.

You can also mix some grease with varsol (aka mineral spirits), hang the cable up, and dribble the liquid grease in.

Some guys prefer dry lubes like molybdenum disulfide.

Thanks Jim. I have that cable spray adapter thingy! So I'll use spray grease.. Wasn't sure if there was a 'preferred' kind or not. I have a can of white lithium grease as well as a can of liquid wrench chain lube-- it says ok to use on wire cables, but I dunno if it is suitable for this cable...

Copy THAT! Good link to all the sleeves and connectors and stuff! THANKS
funny, it's kinda crazy that the bullet connectors are 20¢ each...
