I'm getting ready to start putting together the first of 2 H2's, a 74. I want to put it back in good shape but I'm not looking for concourse level detail. Trying to make it look close to original from 6 to 10 feet away.

I need to clean up and repaint the frame and other black parts (fender brackets, battery box, kickstand, etc.) and was wondering about the best way to prep for paint. I have a sandblaster but wasn't sure if this left too rough a surface. Is sanding or chemical stripping better? I also want to paint them close to original, more of a semi-gloss. Not interested in powder coating as it looks a little too shiny.

I also have to do the body parts, same questions. Sand blast, sand or strip? I'll be painting them a color appropriate for the year but haven't decided which color yet.

My frame was welded, then checked for P points.

After that, I had the opportunity to throw it in a shot peen machine.(hardened skin)

Acetone and metal prep right before 1st coat of epoxy appliance paint.

Tacked up after a day in room temp.
Then 2nd coat, wet, cure for a month.

Your times and temps. will differ. Sunlight would be 1/2 this time after second coat only!

Not a chip since '86 or a score since '84 shall I say.

Low Gloss results due to rough base metal.

No matter the type/method of coating, make sure to clean off coatings in areas that ground to components, like engine to frame mounting lugs, etc.

I glass bead the frame with 220 beads and paint it with single stage gloss enamel with 20% flattener mixed in. It is pretty much an exact match to the Kawasaki black. I hate powder coating, too brittle.
