Old topic but still relevant with an old bike.
I'm cleaning and polishing my rear wheel. I noticed the "Bead Protector" on the rim and it is very heavy. I tried to counter the weight (statically balance) with about 60g of fishing weights but the bead protector is still heavier.
With new tires, do I need the bead protector?

There should be 2 of them, 180 degrees apart.

That makes sense...now. I see a hole 180* from it but no stud. This thing must have shook liike crazy. Wouldn't have been a fun ride.
I'll just remove it and buy new tires. Just have to decide on 120/90-18 or 110/90-18.
