The lean idle helped the rich needle midrange, so I figured I would leave it there until I got the P2 needle jets. Overall it ran better but a bitch to start.

The P2 needle jets were great, and have the needle clips on position 3, the center. I had been compensating the rich midrange with a leaner idle mixture, have now gone back to 1.75 turns open on a 40 idle jet, this needs small amounts of choke to start on warm day, cold engine, and has great throttle response from a standing start or off throttle, much better than I was able to get with the stock VM30s. Also is better with #40 choke/ start jets, I don't have to be as careful with the choke now. I have 250 main jets and these now seem a touch lean so will try going back to the 260. I think it really needs the exhaust port timing increasing, would help the top end power and give a longer blowdown time for the chambers to work better.

Posted about the shift detent problem I had in general, just reposting it here for this build thread, record.
Had overshifting problems, would jump from first to a neutral between first and second. Pulled the clutch sidecover off, found the shift arm stop pin loose, and the shift detent arm had almost no spring tension. CAD designed and CNC machined this roller tip detent arm, with a longer spring arm and more spring tension. TIG welded the sides of the shift stop pin to limit the shift arm travel. Works great, shifts snap into the next gear as they should.
