I got the speedo and tach back together, painted the needles, rims crimped, and think they look decent. The dash wire harness was a mess, been cut and resoldered wrong, I had to make it work, but had not seen another one anywhere, this will do for now. I am missing the turn signal orange 'lens', but found the other two in the box of parts. Also, I don't know what the top larger light hole is for, nor do I have a lens for it or the bulb holder, if it has one. Also don't have the brake light warning bulb holder or it's harness. But it will be ok for now, this build was partially to get it from the basket case it was in to a mostly complete collection of parts, and I will work on getting correct and nicer stuff as I can afford it.

I dont know what the top hole in the gauge cluster is for, but mine has a rubber plug in it. Part part number 92074-032

Not worth $12, but here's a pic of it...

I believe one explanation was the spot was for a big red bulb for the Japanese market, that lit up at 55 mph.

That could very well be. The JDM CB750 had the red bulb...

Sounds like something the Japanese govt would mandate... I thought about using it for a sidestand warning light, but I'll just put the rubber plug in it.
This bike is a LOT of work so far. Got the cylinders finished and bolted back on. I raised the transfers to 70.9 mm, kept the angles similar. Got the rear brake stay and rod finally and working, got a new set of tank mounting rubber, rebuilding the carbs, I found one with an odd needle jet, a 159 Q6, have to replace that, got the motor mounted and tight, I couldn't bear to use the spring washers like they have, gouges up everything, so I used nylock nuts. Removed the clutch cover to helicoil a stripped case thread and polish it, looks like it has new clutch fiber plates. I used one of the bronze clutch actuators, hope it has enough travel to clear the clutch. With an all new cable, lever and actuator, the clutch pull feels like crap honestly, my Yamaha XV750 clutch is so nice, even my KZ1100 one is nicer. Oh well, part of the triple experience I guess.
I have the final sizes for the expansion chambers so have to start buying the stainless sheet and header tube for all that, hose more money at this bike LOL....

Pulled all the engine covers off and polished them, they aren't perfect, but I didn't round off all the corners or take a ton of material off either. I could start hooking all the wiring loom up now, will have to download a diagram I think.

I put the front turn signals on that I have, mainly to mount the headlight... but they just look so stuck out awful I can't leave them there, original or not.. damm the DOT. So I will swap them for something small and CNC machine some adapters to go in the headlight mount, diamond shape mount rubbers.
But this brings up the question, will the stock blinker unit flash some small wattage lights, or LEDs even? Or will I have to add resistors to increase the loads?

Small wattage bulbs or leds will require an electronic flasher.
