Post subject:  How heavy should the clutch lever be?

Hi all

I have a 71 H1A, I've fitted one of those metal machined clutch release mechanisms. With new springs and the clutch lever is heavy. Are they supposed to be heavy? The cable is new and the angle on the clutch release mechanism is is the correct place, it just feels uber heavy. The plates aren't sticking together.

I have no idea how it should feel as I never had an original release mechanism or springs to relate to.

Help or I'll have a forearm like popeye.

What springs? And cable routing is very important. Did you grease the lever pivot and ball end of the cable?

You've probably got some heavy duty springs fitted, go back to standard .

Not all "new" releases are equal....
The amount of travel per degree of rotation varies between releases as does leverage:
4 spline - .450" per 90 deg
6 spline - .430" per 90 deg
Ball Bearing - .380" per 90 deg
Aftermarket Releases:
Tony Nicosia - .410" per 90 deg
Ralf Gille- .240" per 90 deg

This video shows surprising results of Nicosia lever force:

The above replies are also factors.

We did a similar test back a few years comparing the ball bearing release to Ned's hydraulic actuator.
The ball bearing had 15 lbs. and the hydraulic 12.

40 years ago, 18 year old kid, knew nothing, probably bad routing, worn perch, old cable etc... clutch pull made my left arm look like popeye. Over the years, new ball bearing clutch, new cables and proper routings alleviated most of the arm pump.

old cable can be an issue and explanation for heavy clutch.
