I have a nos KH 400 tank. Has anybody ever clear coated a nos tank for protection from today's fuels. Or am I just being paranoid. Figured I would ask the experts.

Thanks

I don't think today's fuel's are a particular problem, (I mean, still keep it clean), But a correctly done 2-pak clear is added insurance against general wear and tear......... note I said "correctly done". (Ex spray-painter here!) :)

If it was mine I would leave it as it is. You can get good enough protection from spilled fuel by using good wax. If you have tanks that are stained you can usually remove them by hand with fine cut rubbing compound, I have got some nasty stains out of paint this way.

Thanks for the info. I should have thought of wax. I bought a restored DT400 tank off eBay a while back and the seller recommended 2K clear. Would this be good overall protection if properly applied? I believe it is urethane based. But it says it is a 2 part clear. Or is there a chance that today's sprays are not compatible with the original paint. I am not trying to be anal but I have not found anybody who can match Candy Emerald Green. So just want to protect it. Plus from what I have seen it sure looks like the sun takes its toll on these original colors.

I have put the 2K over both lacquer and enamel with no reactions. Got to be super clean of any wax or oil. And you will need to scuff the old paint.

In particular, clear Spraymax 2K in the spray can with the button on the bottom to break the hardener capsule, seems to be like Ja-Moo said... fine over almost any base coat. I used it over some old acrylic enamel and over some fresh acrylic lacquer, and it was happy with both. Thanks Cody for telling me about that stuff! I *think* it's an acrylic urethane.
