In other words, if I can't find a 72 tank, can I use a 73? You can't with the 74 and 75 because the welded on brackets that the cap is attached to are different.

H2/A/B tanks are interchangeable but caps are not.

Also shows why you should ALWAYS tape off the filler hole when painting fuel tanks.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

I like use one of these guys to "mask" the fill hole.

Once dry, I sand the "paint ridge" smooth and if the inside of the tank is to recieve coating (or has already been coated), I brush/blend the coating into whatever bare steel is remaining at the top of the filler neck.
