It may have to some degree. There was an imprint of the piston on the cylinder once I tore it apart, which looks like moly leftovers

Maybe before you try to start it consider a vacuum test for each crankcase section to determing if the crankshaft seals will hold vacuum |

So, it's been awhile since I've posted about the project because it went on the back burner for a bit due to issues with some of my other bikes. Anyways, back to the Kawi project! So I'm still tossed up on what to do for pistons and cylinder bore. Here's what I'm thinking. The cylinders look good yet with only a real small spot of rust on one of them. Rust is light enough where I'm sure it will clean up with a ball hone. Also, cylinders are still factory bore size. Factory Pistons look alright, other then the rings are stuck in them. So I guess my question is does anyone have any advice about using a ball home on these cylinders? I've used them on car engines in the past with great results. Any do's or don'ts? I would really like to keep the bore size stock size if possible but clean them up for new Pistons. I guess that's my thought process on this. |

Wossner fan am I. Ball Hone lightly. If you're so inclined a bore gauge can be had fairly cheap but others use calipers or a dial gauge for a quick check (FWTW). I pull the cylinders off all my 2-strokes fairly frequently (because it's easy). |

Thanks for the responses! I'll try a fine stone first on my hone and see how they clean up and measure. If memory serves me correct, I have a few thousandths to play with before I get close to service limit. And definitely going to go with wossners for new pistons. |

The ball hone might take tenths of a thousandth out but you'd probably wear the hone out before you got .001 larger. The thing to keep in mind when honing is stock removal will be greatest at the top and bottom of the bore and around port openings. This is true even with an adjustable or expanding honing head. Don't hone any more than it takes to get your honing scratch into base metal, out of round and hour glass shape is not good. |
