Is there any way to tell what color a bike was originally? My H2C was already repainted solid red when I bought it. A U.S. spec H2C should have been candy red or purple - any way to tell??

Durn!!! 4 bikes after yours and 8 bikes after yours were both RED, 16 bikes before yours was Purple . . . Sorry I can't help further, but the good news is that I'm 100% certain your engine and frame left the factory together!

So what is your rationale of the VIN number vs. the color? Were they painted in batches? Could the dealers order the colors they wanted, or did they have to take what they got? I wonder if the factory has any records.

In my case, I'll pay attention when I strip the paint to see if I can find any remnants of the original color. Any hints on where might be a good place to look? Thanks.

If you're lucky, the original paint was not completely blasted off before application of the non-original paint, so you might be able to find traces of it underneath as you suggested, maybe check at the points where the front tank mounts attach to the tank, or possibly at the rear strap mount?

Without knowing the original color, if I had to pick one I'd personally go with the purple, though the red paint scheme does not "seem" to be as common, but that is just a guess on my part.

UFO LOW

I repainted mine using a pint from Dana at WFO custom paint (I used purple)...google it, he is nice guy to talk to on the phone as well...he custom mixes it, the problem I had trying to have the PPG store mix it from old records, as they said some of the parts in the mix are unavailable........so I said screw it, get some from Dana......it looks really good and has small multi colored flakes in it.......as for the original bikes, to me the purple seemed to vary a bit, maybe some of it is fade from UV rays, etc......mine seems a bit darker, looks better I think.....RB can make you the Decals
