67lotus49 (Ron) is correct

Paint the tank first then clear and color sand......let dry for several days.......apply decals.......let dry several days (two at least)........then clear (stack on some)........then colorsand and buff.

I used WFO custom's paint (Dana) which I like it a lot and it is single stage on 75 Purple anyways (don't need a silver or black base for candy)

I used Reproduction decals........They look great but a REAL PITA  to get on correctly on an H2C tank because it is a pretty stiff vinyl and the tank is long with the curves in the front......I goofed one and the sold me just the side I needed.

After watching some car shows, it appears that the fresher they are, the more pliable they are......the second one went on easier than first did.........I did not know RB had them at the time either but we did get them on and they look good. :banghead

Keep them wet with a spray of water and one drop of soap, squegee them from the center out carefully as you can stretch it and ruin it, keep working the bubbles out, you can use a fine needle and poke a hole if needed (did 3 places like that)......some bubbles go away when it drys but not very much

The vinyl decals look awful if you are doing a restoration........

You probably ought to get a better painter then  It's VERY difficult to tell the difference if good decals are used and the services of a quality painter . . . . If the vinyl decals looked that bad I reckon I would have been out of business 20 years ago ;)

Not "bad" as in bad, just the thickness as compared to the waterset ones. Takes a lot of coats of clear to get them flat.

Yeah, the problem is usually they do a few coats of clear, then buff. And the decal edges are quite obvious.
