Thanks for the great comments guys.Barry what you say makes sense, I didn't spend alot of time making the tester and doing the test but I could have pulled the motor and split it in the same amount of time. I did enjoy making the tester though, but thinking back if the seals are bad (which they probably are) it was kind of a waste of time.
That being sai, I didn't have a chance to rerun the tests tonight but did buy a new plug for the exhaust port that looks like it may seal better. I agree that the crank is not the place to skimp but I haven't done one of these bikes where there is any where to skimp... :D

With the horizontal cases - just too easy not to split'em - piece of cake!

That each cylinder was about the same seems like a good sign. When mine gave out, the left, center seal made a dramatic difference in two cylinders.

Well I did a retest on only the center cylinder tonight as my new exhaust plug won't fit the outside cylinders because it hits on the frame. Used the soapy water trick and found an air leak at the fittings where the pressure and vacumn nipples thread in...tightened them up and guess what, 6 for 6!. I will give it one thumbs up for now. I spent the rest of the evening getting the motor ready to come out. Will take the motor out tomorrow and test the rest of the cylinders...hopefully I can add two more thumbs up.

I suppose if the center crank chamber is well sealed, both inner seals must be good. If you find an outer cylinder doesn't seal, it would have to be an outer replaceable seal causing the problem.

Ok pulled the engine out today and was able to test all three cylinders...All three tested out great. All three held 6lbs indefinately. I was doing other things around the garage and would leave them for awhile, up to 15-20 min each and they all held. So I think I will put a new top end on and hope she holds. BTW I was told when I bought the bike that it had a rebuilt crank but wanted to make sure you never know...
