What was the finish on most of the hardware on the bikes from back in the 60s and early 70s? Were the nuts, bolts and screws that weren't chromed or anodized called a zinc finish? A lot of the fasteners on the Mach III that I just picked up are not dinged from wrenches but are very oxidized and dull looking. Can they be cleaned up good enough for a #1 restoration or do they need to be redone? Is there a place to buy the goods to refinish them or do I need to find all new stuff. Where is the best place to buy new, original looking finish screws and such? Was the finish on the CDI boxes and a few other gold looking parts anodized, and can I redo them myself? Thanks for letting me ask so many questions. I also need a few short chrome plated screws for my B8 restoration, where can I get them? They were rusted in so hard I had to remove them with a channel lock so I can't reuse them.

Most hardware was zinc or cad plated. Cad is out now with EPA. If you try to clean it you will remove what is left and rust will follow unless replated. You can get plating kits here: http://www.caswellplating.com/
