 Post subject: mystery electrical part

this part was in my original wiring harness.

it was between the regulator/rectifier and the battery/fuse. I don't see any reference to it in the electrical schematic in my shop manual. Any idea what it is? Is it needed?

It's a reverse current blocking diode. The early H2s needed it because the regulator would drain the battery slowly without it. Later regs behaved better and Kaw dropped the diode.

To add to Jim's post, they weren't factory installed on the very first H2's, they were supplied by the factory for bikes in service before a frame number that they came already factory installed on.

There may be a FDM for it in mraxl's resources.

I'm pretty sure all '72 H2s had the less desirable regulator, and maybe the '73s too.

My early '72 (6300ish) did not have it from the factory, I learned first hand why those were needed asfter a few months. It wiil discharge the battery in a few weeks. Installed the rectifier and battery never goes down.

The service bulletin answers some questions:

Bulletin#: 73 H-9
Date: May 17, 1972
Bike(s) affected: H2
Subject: H2 rectifier

Action taken:

An H2 not driven frequently may discharge the battery, because of a slight drain on the battery from two small resistors. A supplemental rectifier has been developed to stop this leakage. The new part, part #21061-014 must be installed on H2's through H2E-13265. H2's H2E-13266 and up have this installed from the factory. (It is installed between the red lead from the regulator and the battery.)
