I am researching calipers and read from an unknown source that the gold dot calipers have aluminum pistons and the blue dots have steel. I also learned that r6 calipers 04 and earlier and r1 03 and earlier will fit the same. This conclusion leads me to my query. Gold or blue dot? Aluminum or steel pistons? I am leaning towards the gold dots as I am buying used and am concerned about corrosion.... Are there any disadvantages to the aluminiumn pistons? I will be buying a set of adapter brackets from TDR in Fl for the conversion.... |

You want the brakes on your RZ to be better? I thought they were awfully good. |

I am spoiled with the 2 finger braking power on the Phoenix with the Ex 500 brakes.... I read about an upgrade some people are doing with R1 or R6 calipers.... You are right the stock brakes stop pretty good, just have to squeeze them pretty hard.... |

My guess, the aluminum pistons probably transfer heat better. But I don't see where on the street you would be able to tell much difference. |

Tim, you are correct that the R1 gold spot has aluminum piston and R1 blue spot the steel. I opted for the gold spot calipers a couple of years ago due to your concern of corrosion with steel. Clean and rebuild which ever you buy. I also opted for R1 rotors and had a guy out in the Pacific NW make and sell me the adaptors. Literally a one finger pull with massive stopping power. Evans I am plannning on using this set of adapters from Tony Doukas (TDR) http://www.ebay.com/itm/282068940053?redirect=mobile They allow you to retain the stock rotors. Did you change to a 14 MM master cylinder? Were you able to use your existing lower lines or did you have to get R1 specific lines? I ask because the mount locations are a bit different on the two calipers and I am worried about being able to hook them up. One of the sets of calipers I am looking at has steel braided lines that come with it and I will snag them if that is a factor.... This set http://www.ebay.com/itm/121848970686?redirect=mobile |

Just ordered the aforementioned brackets from TDR. I am not sure whether I am going with blue or gold dot calipers .... The hunt is on... |

Used stock master, stock length brake lines but aftermarket from John at Economy. Lots of those R1 calipers out there which is a bonus! |
