Hi, I am just about to start a rebuild on a dt250 which is marked on the headstock as 9/76 and has points ignition, however it has the monoshock frame and when I try the several sites to Id the bike from the engine or chassis part number it comes out as a 77 (D) :eh: model. As the manuals are either 75-76 or 77-79 I really need one or the other. Any ideas why I have this conflict. Engine and chassis numbers are matching; 1R8000106. Steve.

I found a lot of weirdness on DTs and ITs..... I sleuth-ed a pretty good vin chart a while back - need to find it.

They can't just start building bikes the model year they are, they have to start the previous year. So most late in the year builds are actually the following year model.

Thanks JM I understand that but if the engine is points and the frame is the later one which manual am I working out of? The exhaust comes out the right whereas the 76 is the left so I`m comfortable that the chassis is 77 but as the engine is points which manual? Manuals are not cheap and I don`t want to buy one for the frame and one for the engine. Which wiring harness would I buy and how would a harness set up for cdi ignition be wired for points ignition? I was hoping to jag someone who has the exact mod but that`s a long shot, I have tried several Yamaha 2 stroke sites but no replies whatsoever.

I have at DT100 and wanted a manual. I searched for a while and found an inexpensive PDF file of it. I suspect if you snoop around the forums and search long enough, you can find a cheap or free one for the DT250.

I found this list of manuals that has the DT250 parts manuals available: http://forums.sohc4.net/?topic=17788.0 and the DT250BC version has a page labeled "FLYWHEEL MAGNETO DT250E" that shows a points magneto system. The next page shows "C - D - I - MAGNETO". It's not clear why the DT250E page is in the BC manual, but it sort of looks like the D and E may have been available with points or CDI.

Of course I could be wrong, and someone could have swapped alternators or the whole engine on yours. I bet you can get the full story by asking on a Yamaha DT forum.

I know. They are all conflicting. I just googled Yamaha and the engine part number and that`s how I got the list with the 1R8 as a Dt250D. I have decided to just buy the 77 manual as there are several fittings or pics of fittings which point to it being the 77 not 76 chassis, and obviously the engine is as per 76 with points, the only problem will be matching the wiring as it comes out of the magneto of a points engine with the connections of the D or 77 harness. Just see what happens I suppose. And thanks all. Steve.
